Which Hotel Room Are You Actually Booking?

The photo shows a king bed and a skyline. Will your reservation include both? Here’s where to check before you choose a rate.

Start with the exact room and rate you’re considering. Open its details, then check the beds, view, size and guest capacity. Put the feature your trip depends on first. Two separate beds can matter more than a bigger room.

Booking for three? Set the full party size in the room search and check the occupancy and bedding on the offer you select.

Four details worth checking

Picture how you’ll use the room

Beds

Check the type and count. If someone needs to sleep on the sofa, look for “sofa bed” in the room description.

View

Look for a named view in the offer. Ask about the floor, direction or landmark if it matters to your stay.

Size and layout

Check square feet or square meters. If you need a separate bedroom or space for a crib, look for the layout in the description or floor plan.

Guest capacity

Enter everyone staying, including children. Check the guest count for the room and how each person will sleep.

What does the room name tell you?

Open an example to see what the wording tells you and what to check next.

Deluxe King · City View

The wording describes a king room with a city view. If you’re booking for a specific skyline or a high floor, ask which rooms in that category offer it.

Hyatt Regency San Francisco illustrates the difference. Its room pages list 1 King Bed with a variable view and a separate 1 King Bed Bay View category.

Deluxe Room · 1 King or 2 Doubles

The room can come in either setup. Check whether you can choose a bed type on the offer and whether the hotel can confirm it. If you’re sharing with a colleague or a friend, look for an offer that specifies two beds.

Room Assigned at Check-In

Check what the offer leaves to the hotel to assign. MGM Resorts, for example, uses Run of House for an offer where it assigns the bed type at check-in. If you need a particular bed, view or layout, choose an offer that lists it or ask for confirmation before booking.

When one feature matters most

Ask about the room by name

A work trip might depend on a desk. A family might need two separate beds. A traveler might need a roll-in shower. Give the hotel the exact room name, dates and party size so it can answer for the right offer.

Before you pay, match the room name and dates, then review the guest count, full stay price and cancellation terms on the rate you’ve selected. Save the confirmation and any room details the hotel confirmed in writing.

Hotel room questions

Can I request a quieter room?

Tell the hotel what keeps you awake, such as traffic or elevator noise. Ask whether it can assign a room in a quieter location within the category you’ve chosen.

What if my confirmation uses a shorter room name?

Compare it with the room offer you saved. If a detail you were counting on is unclear, give your booking provider the confirmation number and ask it to verify that feature.

Why does the same room have two prices?

The room can have more than one rate. Compare breakfast, payment timing, cancellation rules and the total for the same dates and guests.

Can I ask the front desk for an upgrade?

Yes. Ask which rooms are available and whether an upgrade is complimentary or has a fee. Confirm the new room name and total before accepting.
